Winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize, the 2004 Tony Award, the 2004 Drama Desk Award, the 2004 Outer Critics Circle Award, and the 2004 Lucille Lortel Award.
Based on a true story, and inspired by interviews conducted by the playwright over several years, I AM MY OWN WIFE tells the fascinating tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a real-life German transvestite who managed to survive both the Nazi onslaught and the repressive East German Communist regime. Founding Artistic Director Mark Cabus (Naked Stages’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL and The Rep’s INHERIT THE WIND and WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?), portrays thirty-two characters, from Charlotte to the German Cultural Minister to playwright Doug Wright himself, all in a black hausfrau dress and pearls. No stranger to one-man performances, Cabus stars in the Middle Tennessee premiere of this challenging, award-winning play. Belmont University’s Kate Al-Shamma (Actors Bridge’s BLUE/ORANGE) directs.
“I AM MY OWN WIFE is the most stirring new work to appear on Broadway in years … both moving and intellectually absorbing.” —NY Times.
“… saucy, sagacious, entirely fascinating solo play …” —Village Voice.
“… riveting theatre … the structure of the play is original, challenging, and involving.” —BackStage.
“(This) vivid portrait of Germany in the second half of the 20th century is a morally complex tale about what it takes to be a survivor and an intriguing meditation on everything from the obsession with collecting to the passage of time.” —The Chicago Sun-Times.
